The Oxygen Advantage : Experience Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in London
There’s a question I like to ask people during their first consultation at BE SUPERHUMAN, mostly because it catches them off guard: when was the last time you actually thought about how you breathe?
Nobody has a good answer, which is rather the point. In a city like London, breathing tends to go shallow without anyone noticing – you’re running on adrenaline, coffee and a diary that doesn’t leave much room for anything as basic as a proper breath. And yet oxygen is genuinely the foundation of how your body makes energy.
Without enough of it reaching where it’s needed, everything from tissue repair to mental clarity to recovery after exercise ends up running below par.
That’s the reason Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy has become such a popular fixture for city professionals, athletes and anyone generally trying to feel a bit more on top of things.
Here’s a proper look at how it works and what your options are with us.
How Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Actually Works
Under normal conditions, the oxygen you breathe travels around your body almost entirely carried by red blood cells. Step into a hyperbaric chamber and two things change at once – you’re breathing purified oxygen, and you’re doing it inside a gently pressurised environment, measured in something called ATA, or atmospheres absolute.
That extra pressure changes how your body takes up the oxygen. Rather than depending solely on red blood cells to ferry it around, the pressure allows oxygen to dissolve directly into your blood plasma, your lymphatic fluid, and even your cerebrospinal fluid. In effect, oxygen ends up reaching parts of your system it wouldn’t normally get to as easily.
The practical upshot, as I explain it to clients, is that by increasing how much oxygen is available throughout your whole system, the therapy is designed to support your body’s own repair processes, help take the edge off everyday fatigue, and often leaves people with a genuinely clear-headed, well-rested feeling afterwards.
Choosing Your Chamber
We don’t believe one setup suits everyone, so there are three tiers, and which one makes sense really depends on your goals and how new you are to the whole idea.
The Silver Tank : Gentle Everyday Vitality
If you’ve never tried oxygen therapy before, HBOT silver tank is where to start. It’s a comfortable, soft-shell tank running at a gentle 1.3 ATA, and the sixty-minute session is built around everyday wellbeing rather than anything intense. The aim is simply a gentle boost in oxygen availability to support recovery, help with general tiredness, and leave you with a bit more in the tank, so to speak, for the rest of your week.
The Gold Tank : A Step Up For Active Recovery
For anyone wanting to push a bit further, the HBOT Gold Tank is a firmer, hard-shell chamber running at 1.5 ATA, with sessions lasting sixty to ninety minutes. This is the one our more active clients tend to favour – people training seriously and looking to support muscle recovery, or professionals after that particular combination of physical relaxation and sharp mental clarity that seems to come with a longer session at higher pressure.
The Platinum Deluxe Tank : The Full Experience
HBOT Platinum Deluxe Tank offers flexible pressure settings between 1.5 and 2.0 ATA in a spacious hard-shell chamber, with a screen built in so you can watch something or simply switch off entirely. Sessions run sixty to ninety minutes, and it’s designed for those wanting the most thorough oxygen support available, whether that means genuine rest or an hour catching up on a programme while your body gets on with the actual work.
What Your First Session is Actually Like
It’s completely normal to feel a bit unsure before your first visit, so here’s exactly what to expect.
As the chamber pressurises over the first few minutes, you’ll feel a fullness in your ears, much like the sensation on a plane during takeoff. We’ll talk you through simple ways to clear them – swallowing, yawning, pinching your nose – so it stays comfortable throughout.
On what to wear, we ask for clean, loose-fitting, 100% cotton clothing, and it’s best to skip strong perfume, heavy lotion or hair products on the day.
For the Gold and Platinum chambers specifically, safety regulations mean phones and any battery-powered devices need to stay outside.
Most people, once they’ve adjusted to the idea, actually end up telling us this is their favourite part – a properly uninterrupted hour with nothing demanding their attention, which in London is rarer than it should be.
Worth Making Time For
Whether you’re recovering from a hard block of training, trying to shift the mental fog of a demanding few weeks at work, or just want an hour of genuine, undisturbed rest, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy gives your body a proper environment to do that in.
If you’re not sure which tank fits what you’re after, that’s exactly the kind of thing to talk through with the team before you book – it takes two minutes and saves you guessing.
Frequently Asked Questions
It’s used to support the body’s natural recovery and repair processes by increasing how much oxygen is available throughout the system, and is commonly used for everyday fatigue, athletic recovery, and general wellbeing.
Yes, for most healthy adults it’s considered safe when carried out in a properly supervised clinical setting. Mild ear pressure similar to a flight is common and manageable with simple techniques, and it’s worth discussing any medical conditions with the clinic beforehand.
Sessions typically run between 60 and 90 minutes depending on the chamber, with the entry-level Silver Tank sessions generally lasting around an hour.
The Silver Tank offers a gentler pressure suited to everyday vitality, the Gold Tank runs at a higher pressure aimed at more active recovery, and the Platinum Deluxe Tank offers the widest, most flexible pressure range for the most thorough session.
In the soft-shell Silver Tank this may be possible, but in the hard-shell Gold and Platinum chambers, safety regulations require all phones and battery-powered devices to be left outside during the session.
This depends on your goals, but many people start with a weekly session and adjust from there, with those recovering from intense training or a particularly demanding period sometimes visiting more frequently for a period before settling into a maintenance routine.
